The
mathematics of numerics -- Obstacles to using
mathematical equations in numerical simulations
A very fruitful enterprise in
any numerical work is to take existing mathematical knowledge and
turn it into a numerical algorithm. Since the respective
advantages and disadvantages of mathematical ("pen and paper")
and numerical methods ("programmes") are often disjunct, a
successful combination can be very rewarding. Coming from the
numerical side, I will highlight some key differences, pointing out
examples where numerical methods tend to fail in rather simple
mathematical cases. My aim is to give some insight to mathematicians
trying to understand why numericists shy away from certain seemingly
simple equations.
